You feel frozen But you've been chosen You lay there drunken Your dreams seem sunken Your world's a small one And you break the rules You're one big fish In a bowl of fools Tired of serving up your town Tired of wearing that crown Tired of sliding up and down Tired of being you Your work's no future Your girl don't suit you Your bar won't serve you You have no nerve to Make a break From this sad old school Across the lake Lies a place that's cool Run, you got a place to go Run, you got a boat to row Run, you got a face to show Run while you can The high street's sleeping As Friday's creeping The shops are open But their minds are closed How's it going? But it's not their concern They're talking stuff about you That you never learn Smile, you're on your own Smile, 'cause you've outgrown Smile, you lost your home Smile to yourself

To the folks who need the money but won't sell the family forty Keep telling that suit and tie no To all them hidden county liners, little mom and pop diners Keep telling big money where to go Remember God only made so much real estate Tell the bank I'm gon' take it to the grave Let's keep the red dirt roads red dirt Keep the little white church, keep keeping God first Keep dragging that plow, keep the blue on your collar Keep the sweat on your dollar, keep the sins in the water And your roots in thе ground Keep standing tall, the hell in your naw Herе's to all y'all keepin' small towns small To the ones who rocking rust on a box-bodied truck Rev it up, keep that rubber burned down To the ones coming home to your homecoming queen Keep making that girl's daddy proud To all of y'all fighting for that flag We gon' hold it down 'til ya get back And keep the red dirt roads red dirt Keep the little white church, keep keeping God first Keep dragging that plow, keep the blue on your collar Keep the sweat on your dollar, keep the sins in the water And your roots in the ground Keep standing tall, the hell in your naw Here's to all y'all keepin' small towns small To the gone but not forgotten God, tell 'em we got 'em And we know they're looking down on this town So we gon' keep them red dirt roads red dirt Keep the little white church, keep keeping God first Keep dragging that plow, keep the blue on your collar Keep the sweat on your dollar, keep the sins in the water And your roots in the ground Keep standing tall, the hell in your naw Here's to all y'all keepin' small towns small We keepin' small towns small

There used to be places only we would go Under the shade of the oak tree over the old dirt road This town was our kingdom, I was your whole world Right from the moment we met, I knew that you would be my girl But people get older, hearts they grow colder Now there ain't no place that I can hide 'Cause there's nowhere to run to in a small town There's nowhere the memory don't follow me around 'Cause you're there on every corner Every street is us There's no bigger way of breaking up Than in a small town In a small town, mm-mm From the old churchyard, to the corner store It's like everywhere that I go, your face is living in the walls (living in the walls) 'Cause there's no escaping who we used to be This town is a hot, dry, dusty love song to you and me But people get older, hearts they grow colder Now there ain't no place that I can hide 'Cause there's nowhere to run to in a small town There's nowhere the memory don't follow me around 'Cause you're there on every corner Every street is us There's no bigger way of breaking up Than in a small town In a small town (in a small town) I know that everybody's talking Choosing the words they say with caution All of the whispers sound like shouting in my ears 'Cause there's nowhere to run to in a small town There's nowhere the memory don't follow me around There's no keeping secrets in a small town (in a small town) There's a real good chance that's all that anyone's talkin' 'bout You're there on every corner Every street is us There's no bigger way of breaking up Than in a small town (In a small town, living in a small town) When you're living in a small town, living in a small town (In a small town, living in a small town) (In a small town, living in a small town) In a small town

Well, the day Carlene went from blonde to green, everybody lost their minds Then poor Steve got a tattoo sleeve, they swear that he's gonna do time If somebody's cheatin', thinkin' it's a secret, man, they're thinkin' wrong It's gonna hit the press, then everybody says, how they knew it all along No, you can't run from it You don't want none of it If you stick around here, you can't steer clear You're gonna get some of it I'm tellin' y'all that eventually You're bound to be steppin' in that small-town bullshit When you graduate with 28 kids in your senior high It ain't hard to say who's to really blame for Katie's two pink lines Everybody thinks he oughta buy her a ring, before her daddy knows 'Cause if he don't, man, he's a dead man And boy, she's startin' to show No, you can't run from it You don't want none of it If you stick around here, you can't steer clear You're gonna get some of it I'm tellin' y'all that eventually You're bound to be steppin' in that small-town bullshit Or step 'round No, you can't run from it And you don't want none of it If you plant your roots, you better watch your boots There's gonna be a ton of it I'm tellin' y'all that eventually You're bound to be steppin' in that small-town bullshit In that small-town bullshit

It's the end of a story The end of a fairytale Leave the dust on the cover Put it back on the shelf I've run out of excuses You're the only reason I stayed here I've given up on everything, everything I am Waiting for the boy to be a man I'm leaving Peter Pan Boy why are you cryin'? I still love Neverland There's more to a girl than fighting and growing and flying, Leaving Peter Pan Second star to the right and straight into the morning sun Yea we were really magic you made me feel like I belonged But I keep hearing a whisper, telling me this isn't real dear Here there is no future, time is but a ruse You'll never love me like I loved you I'm leaving Peter Pan Boy why are you cryin'? I still love Neverland There's more to a girl than fighting and growing and flyin', I'm leaving Peter Pan Leaving Peter I'm leaving Peter Pan Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh I wish you'd never kissed me Cuz now you won't come with me I'm leaving Peter Pan Boy why are you cryin'? I still love Neverland There's more to a girl than fighting and growing and flying I'm leaving Peter Pan I'm leaving Peter Pan It's the end of a story

Hand me down dreams got me high in the rafters Homecoming queen couldn't be an outsider So there I'd sit, with a cigarette lit in a leather jacket I found a boy who was a stranger too In a one-horse town at a stable for two We had matching scars and matching tattoos Both dying to fit in Ain't that some shit We're just small-town hypocrites And that scholarship was a ship that sailed When I chose you and daddy gave me hell I made myself into someone else just to love you, damn I loved you Took all my plans and I put 'em in a box Phantom pains for the wings I lost Had me circling rings in the catalogs For seven years and you never got the hint Ain't that some shit I'm just a small-town hypocrite Swore we'd be running, running, running this town But you're just running, running, running around And I'm staring at a picket fence Wondering where the hell time went I should've been running, running, running by now But I just hang around Love shot me out like a rocket Never to return and man, I forgot it How it feels to fall from orbit and land on shifting sands I found my heart at the bottom of a bucket You said you needed space and damnit I bought it 'Till you moved in a vinyl sided double wide with a couple of her kids Ain't that some shit You're just a small-town hypocrite (Oooh, oooh, ooooh) Swore we'd be running, running, running this town But you're still running, running, running around And I'm staring at a picket fence Wondering where the hell time went I should've been running, running, running by now But I just hang around (Ooh) Now I bitch about how things turned and how they should've been The bridges that I burned and the trains I didn't catch Like a small-town hypocrite Just a small-town hypocrite

You leave in the morning With everything you own in a little black case Alone on a platform The wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face Mother will never understand Why you had to leave But the answers you seek Will never be found at home The love that you need Will never be found at home Run away, turn away Run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away Run away, turn away, run away Pushed around and kicked around Always a lonely boy You were the one that they'd talk about around town As they put you down And as hard as they would try They'd hurt to make you cry But you never cried to them Just to your soul No, you never cried to them Just to your soul Run away, turn away Run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away Run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away Run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away Run away, turn away, run away Cry, boy, cry Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry You leave in the morning With everything you own in a little black case Alone on a platform The wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face Run away, turn away Run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away Run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away Run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away Run away, turn away, run away

It's a one red light town whose back roads are ours And we got our names up on that water tower Some things 'round here, they don't ever change Like waking up and working hard and knowing when to chase down Those good times Flying down the road under the moonlight To the place we always go Where the bonfire high Meets the stars and the sky Yeah, living our lives for these small town Friday nights We pass it 'round and we throw it back You can't stop that buzz when we do it like that Put that weekend to dust, tonight's about us Yeah, we've got our own way of turning it up With the good times Flying down the road under the moonlight To the place we always go Getting wild in the dark Just young crazy hearts Going too far Yeah, we take this two lane way out When no one else can find us Got these four wheels And that county line behind us Where the bonfire high Meets the stars and the sky Yeah, living our lives for these small town Friday nights Good times Flying down the road under the moonlight To the place we always go Getting wild in the dark Just young crazy hearts Going too far Yeah, we take this two lane way out When no one else can find us Got these four wheels And that county line behind us Where the bonfire high Meets the stars and the sky Yeah, living our lives for these small town Friday nights Something 'bout that freedom That backroad dust That 2 a.m. blow Just doing it our way The way country hits Let some damn home on it I wish every night was a small town Friday night

When the guys in Eli Young Band were thinking about songs To put on their new greatest hits album Do you know that they actally had an album they released Before they were signed to the Big Machine label group? And they decided to go back to that album And pick a couple of songs from there to put on the greatest hits Now the first one that we're gonna play it's called "Small Town Kid" For anybody who grew up in a small town This was Mike Eli's tribute to his small town upbringing And more importantly this song taught Mike something about himself as an artist Who I was in high school where I grew up like it felt very small town Everybody knew what was happening in everybody's lifes And everything was changing and a lot of people were moving there They built this highway and so the access to our town was just changing dramatically And that was kind of like where I was going with writing that song And then it ended up kinda of I think being this ode To being proud of where you came from But I think that-that song for me Was my first outing of figuring out "Hey, I can write a song, that's cool" Like I said, this song was off of Eli Young Band's very first album back in 2005 It was called "Level" This is "Small Town Kid" and you'll find it on "This is Eli Young Band: Greatest Hits" which is available now

I thought this town would be big enough for the the two of us But when that sun sinks down I don't know who to trust Got people everywhere at every bar Telling me like I wanna know where the hell you been parking your car I thought a breakup in the city would be easier to take, but Feels a little like the middle of a po-dunk county with the one pump Everybody knows somebody, girl, I can't run Going downtown now, that we're done feels a lot Like the one stop dot that I came from Run into your crowd, all the same Like a Sunday morning service or a Friday night home game I try but I can't hide heartbreak in a high rise See you getting over me under the streetlights Thought I'd never see you but you're all around Girl, you make a big city feel like a small town, small town There's a million people here, but you keep running into me And you'd think there'd be enough bars to stay apart on division street Follow me every night at every place Just not what I imagined when you said you needed space I thought a breakup in the city would be easier to take, but Feels a little like the middle of a po-dunk county with the one pump Everybody knows somebody, girl, I can't run Going downtown now, that we're done feels a lot Like the one stop dot that I came from Run into your crowd, all the same Like a Sunday morning service or a Friday night home game I try but I can't hide heartbreak in a high rise See you getting over me under the streetlights Thought I'd never see you but you're all around Girl, you make a big city feel like a small town, small town Woah Thought you were gone walkin' out on me, out on me Woah But you're all around and it's killin' me, I won't be Going downtown now, that we're done feels a lot Like the one stop dot that I came from Run into your crowd all the same Like a Sunday morning service or a Friday night home game I try but I can't hide heartbreak in a high rise See you getting over me under the streetlights Thought I'd never see you but you're all around Girl, you make a big city feel like a small town, small town Girl, you make a big city feel like a small town, small town

I hear the train a comin It's rollin' 'round the bend And I ain't seen the sunshine Since I don't know when I'm stuck in Folsom Prison And time keeps draggin' on But that train keeps a-rollin On down to San Antone When I was just a baby My Mama told me son Always be a good boy Don't ever play with guns But I shot a man in Reno Just to watch him die When I hear that whistle blowin I hang my head and cry I bet there's rich folks eatin In a fancy dining car They're probably drinkin' coffee And smokin' big cigars But I know I had it comin I know I can't be free But those people keep a-movin And that's what tortures me Well, if they freed me from this prison If that railroad train was mine I bet I'd move out over a little Farther down the line Far from Folsom Prison That's where I want to stay And I'd let that lonesome whistle Blow my blues away

I've been reminiscing 'bout you and I, you and I, oh you and I Yeah, we had big love in a small town What I'd give just to get a little bit back now Yeah, we fell in just as fast as we fell out We were too young to settle down and a big love in a small town In a small town, baby Do you ever think about me When you close your eyes at night? Do you ever think about me? Lost in a dream In a small town In a small town We had big love in a small town What I'd give just to get a little bit back now Yeah, we fell in just as fast as we fell out We were too young to settle down always distant and in and out Ain't that the thing about big love in a small town?
