Younger Years - song lyrics

Above the plains of Omaha
I think of all the sufferin' I saw
The soakin' of the pavement
Sprawled upon a land without a law

Everythin' I loved
Everythin' I found or I hoped for
Frightened and surrounded
Who else is there to turn to anymore?

Oh, I held out my arms
Oh, I held out my arms
Held out my arms

There was a time I spoke the truth
But my younger years were wasted on my youth
Somewhere I awakened
With a crack to a pounding on the roof

Sure I heard the sound
As evidence, or better yet as proof
I was naked as the day I was born
'Neath the fullness of the moon

Oh, I held out my arms
Oh, I held out my arms
Held out my arms

Far away I hear singin'
Far away a song

The blinding light of morning came
Flooding through the window like a friend
Like a wild revelation
Like a shining invitation to attend

Spoken as a prayer
Unbroken by despair I make amends
The love inside our hearts
Is the only kind of savior we've been sent

Oh, I held out my arms
Oh, I held out my arms
Held out my arms

Back to a time where our feet ran like the talk does today Get back to a time where eyes were wide for all that was praised Bent and frayed from older days But here today because fo those ways When you stare at the sun and pick those daisies as you run Took the time to tell stories of the creatures yet to come And our cups overflowed in that home grown July Hearts full, brought tears to my eyes Breaking boundaries that should never have been Trying to write when you have never stood up to see what's within, see time brings clarity Whats beyond the composed? Transparent causality of childhood as we grow When you stare at the sun and pick those daisies as you run Took the time to tell stories of the creatures yet to come And our cups overflowed in that home grown July Hearts full, brought tears to my eyes To friends that are family and family that are friends, may your night turn into morning and the barefoot never end Cause tomorrow won't fit yesterdays shoes, so we'll choose to win or loose When you stare at the sun and pick those daisies as you run Took the time to tell stories of the creatures yet to come And our cups overflowed in that home grown July Hearts were full, and that brought tears to my eyes

Two, one-two-three-four Johnny's in the drive and he's drinkin' again Rough crowd downtown, but they're all my friends By the end of the night, I won't recall my name Well my Levi jean queen, I've been here all night, see Someday, I'll take you somewhere it never rains But for right now, I'm tearin' down this town How being young is so painful and strange Deborah's on the bar and she's dancin' again To an old folk song that reminds her of him She ain't gettin' down 'til they carry her away She was his Levi jean queen, but he's long gone now, see At the end of the night, she'll get choked up by his name And she'll try her best just to let him go Well, she's sick and tired of his rough and younger ways Lettin' go, movin' on, keepin' strong and findin' God I find it awfully odd we made it here A few good friends on the longest night, gettin' high until we cry Enjoyin' all the pain of younger years And now I'm drunk and walkin' home all alone, my honey Lookin' for a better place to spend my money Like takin' my Levi jean queen to see the stars Tougher than a lover and leaner than a fighter Looks to me, we got another all-nighter I think God put us exactly where we are Lettin' go, movin' on, keepin' strong and findin' God I find it awfully odd we made it here A few good friends on the longest night, gettin' high until we cry Enjoyin' all the pain of younger years Enjoyin' all the pain of younger years Well, Johnny's in the drive, and he's drinking again Rough crowd downtown but they're all my friends By the end of the night, I won't recall my name

My life's going backwards No plan for disaster Lost looking for the answers I act tough but I got hurt My words turn to daggers Falling back into patterns yeah It doesn't matter now, I'm spinning out, upside down I wanna runaway My minds been sick for months Bottles of chardonnay Poured into sippy cups And I don't know why Something ain't right When the going gets rough It's like we're going back in time And I just don't know who to trust I'm getting younger Losing all control Screaming like thunder I need a hand to hold It's all getting tougher I can barely recover I'm getting younger Losing all control Screaming like thunder I need a hand to hold I'm goin' under Cuz I'm getting younger As I'm getting old Wrong turn and I got lost Had it all and then it dropped off Thought I could deal with it, thought I could take the hit But now I'm left here in the dust Now I'm tilted Feel so distant Life is shifting and I don't know why I wanna runaway My minds been sick for months Bottles of chardonnay Poured into sippy cups And I don't know why Something ain't right When the going gets rough It's like we're going back in time And I just don't know who to trust I'm getting younger Losing all control Screaming like thunder I need a hand to hold It's all getting tougher I can barely recover I'm getting younger Losing all control Screaming like thunder I need a hand to hold I'm goin' under Cuz I'm getting younger As I'm getting old

Time is slipping through our fingers Slowly, we're running out Sun is setting on the horizon Quickly, we're running out Of daylight, I wonder Will we take flight upon the Starry night into the unknown? In the daylight, I wonder Will we take flight upon the Starry night into the unknown? We ain't getting any younger, younger We ain't getting any younger, younger We ain't getting any younger, younger We ain't getting any younger, younger, younger, a-a-a We keep dreaming, city sleeping Slowly, we're running out Clock is ticking and all these years keep passing I don't wanna leave this world with a bitter taste In the daylight, I wonder Will we take flight (take flight) upon the (upon the) Starry night into the unknown? In the daylight (daylight), I wonder (I wonder) Will we take flight upon the Starry night into the unknown? We ain't getting any younger, younger We ain't getting any younger, younger We ain't getting any younger, younger We ain't getting any younger, younger, younger What if one night was all we had? Just one night, that's all I ask One night What if it's all we had? What if one night was all we had? Just one night, that's all I ask One night What if it's all we had? What if one night was all we had? Just one night, that's all I ask One night What if it's all we had? What if one night was all we had? Just one night, that's all I ask One night What if it's all we had? We ain't getting any younger, younger We ain't getting any younger, younger We ain't getting any younger, younger We ain't getting any younger, younger

Far away from preying eyes I cry I cry for you A broken crown in solitude I only see the moon Time stands still until the ways break open They wash away They wash away They wax away They only see the moon Da, da, da, da Da, da, da Da Da, da Da, da, da, da Da, da, da, da Fall away into the sea Me and you they force so wildly I can't see you how I used to I only see the moon I almost to remember you I only see the moon

There's a light that's shining down And a calm wind in the pine For the fate of a fearsome travesty Seems to have forgotten me Seems to have forgotten me If it hasn't learned by now Where I've hid so very long I'll come safely out into the silence found In the wake of it's passing on In the wake of it's passing on A Spartan smile and Westward stare Hold a promise in the air That's the way they used to find their own way home By the stars, on their own By the stars, on their own While I pray for promised land To replace all I have made Darkness steals the light I bear And the hope of a lifetime fades The hope of a lifetime fades In the newfound reverie Of quiet peace, I found Freedom comes from being unafraid Of the heartache that can plague a man The heartache that can plague a man A Spartan smile and Westward stare Hold a promise in the air That's the way they used to find their own way home By the stars, on their own By the stars, on their own Thank you

I think I really miss my bed Oh when, oh when will the nightmare end? I had it good, I had it good And yet I left and can't retrace my steps My steps (Ohh) You're gonna be eaten by a coyote Run, little one, though the pack may follow Two quite thin, their brother fatter He can still win, just gotta be faster Run for the yard, they've barred up the gutter That was our route, better find another Was that a rabbit? Really not like the one I'vе seen on a cereal box And the birds don't talk Likе the ones on screen Have they really domesticated me? And the birds don't talk Like the ones on screen Have they really domesticated me? Cotton tail, gonna end up in jail Wrong place, wrong time Bad tune but it rhymed And lined up perfectly to blame The one who is far too tame And he say "Out, let me in, let me in, let me out Stop tellin' me all about your problems I been to hell, still in, get me out Whatever they are, I don't know how to solve 'em" "Out, let me in, let me in, let me out Stop tellin' me all about your problems I been to hell, still in, get me out Whatever they are, I don't know how to solve 'em" Say, is that the kid from the milk carton? Can I do anything when I'm also missing? Something tells me kid Never learned to swim But can I do anything when I'm also drowning? Think I forgot a couple things My brain is still at home Home's far away I really thought that life was one big race But now I know it's one big chase You can still win, just gotta be faster You can, you can, you can, you can win You can still win, just gotta be faster You can, you can, you can, you can win You can still win, just gotta be faster You can, you can, you can, you can win You can still win, just gotta be faster You can, you can, you can, you can win You can still win, just gotta be faster You can, you can, you can, you can win You can still win, just gotta be I think I really miss my bed Oh when, oh when will the nightmare end? I had it good, I had it good And yet I left and can't retrace my steps Think I forgot a couple things My brain is still at home (Stop telling me all about your problems) Home's far away I really thought that life was one big race But now I know it's one big chase (Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh) You're gonna be eaten by a coyote Run little one Though the pack may follow Two quite thin, their brother fatter You can still win, just gotta be You're gonna be eaten by a coyote Run little one Though the pack may follow Two quite thin, their brother fatter You can still win, just gotta be You can still win, just gotta be Oh, the air is thick Kinda makes me sick Can I give CPR when I'm suffocating? And the birds don't sing Like the ones on screen Have they really domesticated me? (You can still win, just gotta be) Have they really domesticated me? (You can still win, just gotta be) Have they really domesticated me? (You can still win, just gotta be) Have they really domesticated me? (Faster!)

How fickle my heart and how woozy my eyes I struggle to find any truth in your lies And now my heart stumbles on things I don't know My weakness I feel I must finally show Lend me your hand and we'll conquer them all But lend me your heart and I'll just let you fall Lend me your eyes I can change what you see But your soul you must keep, totally free Har har, har har, har har, har har Awake my soul Awake my soul How fickle my heart and how woozy my eyes I struggle to find any truth in your lies And now my heart stumbles on things I don't know My weakness I feel I must finally show Har har, har har, har har, har har In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die And where you invest your love, you invest your life In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die And where you invest your love, you invest your life Awake my soul Awake my soul Awake my soul For you were made to meet your maker Awake my soul Awake my soul Awake my soul For you were made to meet your maker You were made to meet your maker
