The World That Was - song lyrics

The world that was has now become a cause
Inspiring simple souls all over
Who have a knack of always looking back
While drunk or even sober

No matter what you may have often heard
There's been no death of satire
There's more, not less, when "Thank you NHS"
Is painted on a spitfire
The world that was has now become a cause all over

Black and white
One truth they know
The modern world will have to go

The world that was draws memories of our past
Which seem a wee bit hazy
From what I see, the summary seems to be
More meat with extra gravy

And though I feel I'm a rational man
Sometimes I'm sorely tempted
But worship of a past that never was
Is totally demented
The world that was has now become a cause all over

Saw a vacancy sign off of Highway 1 With a tiki bar and pool out front You had a black two piece with an island tan Swaying your hips to a reggae band We locked eyes under Florida skies and then you grabbed my hand, and Right there under a string of white lights At motel bar just west of Big Pine With your sun kissed lips and your red sangria Found what I, didn't know I needed In a card to room 303 Yeah, that was the key Your brown hair blowin' in the breeze Salt in the air from the balcony Ran your hands all over me So caught up I could barely speak I remember how it all went down, and I still like to think, that Right there under a string of white lights At motel bar just west of Big Pine With your sun kissed lips and your red sangria Found what I, didn't know I needed In a card to room 303 Yeah, that was the key Yeah, that was the key They say you'll find it when you least expect it If I was a ship, baby you would've of wrecked it, yeah, cuz Right there under a string of white lights At motel bar just west of Big Pine With your sun kissed lips and your red sangria Found what I didn't know I needed In a card to room 303 Yeah, that was the key That was the key, yeah

If I paint the lashes dark And the eyes more bright And your lips more scarlet Ask if it'll all be right And it's mirror after mirror No vanities displayed You're just looking for the face you had Before the world was made Before the world was made Before the world was made And if I look upon you now As though on my beloved With the earth beneath your feet And the heaven up above Ah, would you think me cruel? After everything's been said You're only looking for the face you had Before the world was made Before the world was made Before the world was made And if I paint the lashes dark And your eyes more bright And your lips more scarlet Ask if it'll all be right And it's mirror after mirror No vanities displayed I'm just looking for the face you had Before the world was made Before the world was made Before the world was made Your original face Before time and space Your original face Before time and space Your original, original face Before the world was made Before the world was made Before the world was made

It isn't by chance I happen to be A boulevardier, the toast of Paris For over the noise, the talk and the smoke I'm good for a laugh, a drink or a joke I walk in a room, a party or ball Come sit over here, somebody will call A drink for monsieur, a drink for us all But how many times I stop and recall Ah, the apple trees Blossoms in the breeze That we walked among Lying in the hay Games we used to play While the rounds were sung Only yesterday, when the world was young Wherever I go, they mention my name And that in itself, is some sort of fame Come by for a drink, we're having a game Wherever I go, I'm glad that I came The talk is quite gay, the company's fine There's laughter and lights, and glamour and wine And beautiful girls and some of them mine But often my eyes see a different shine Ah, the apple trees Sunlit memories Where the hammock swung On our backs, we'd lie Looking at the sky 'Til the stars were strung Only last July when the world was young

Since I started being impressed By the things that move me All the treasures that I missed Came back to stand around me And as I curse the wasted time I lift my head to say Thank you God you gave the strength That helped me walk away All the fear and anger Still stays within my heart And I can't recall the last time I imagined they'd depart But this is what I'm going to do When they force me to doubt I'll ask for what I know remains To help me sing them out As rays of sun shine through the clouds To heat the soaking ground So when we come to sing the shouts We'll burn the theatres down Let every disbelieving sneer That looked me in the back Turn, come towards us, and feel the first attack.

Along these broken pavements I let my mind run free The past and the present Seem just the same to me The people I have loved most Among these stones they dwell And in the cleanest language The stories they did tell They pass, they pass, they pass, they pass The streets of Edinburgh Hold half the world for me In scores, in droves, the living and the ghosts The streets of Edinburgh Mean most to me Depending on your view point This place is blessed or cursed And in the years I've lived here I've seen the best and worst An air of sordid passion A look of dirty grace But not right in your face It's not that kind of place They pass, they pass, they pass, they pass The streets of Edinburgh Hold half the world for me In scores, in droves, the living and the ghosts The streets of Edinburgh Mean most to me Down greasy potholed roadways I watch the traffic crawl But for the cars and busses I give no thought at all I think about the future I wonder at her health How with this human wealth She does renew herself They pass, they pass, they pass, they pass The streets of Edinburgh Hold half the world for me In scores, in droves, the living and the ghosts The streets of Edinburgh Mean most to me

Shadows fall on our lives So quickly, my friend We feel warmth and see light Then darkness descends Shadows fall without warning And we stumble around Shadows fall without pity And there's no peace to be found Shadows fall on our lives So slowly, my friend We see them coming for miles But our happiness we don't defend Shadows fall where we let them As neglect turns to regret Shadows fall, do you never get them? Ah, you haven't lived long enough yet. Shadows fall on our loved ones When we are not to blame And we can't see any reason Why they're carrying all that pain Shadows fall right on them While there's light to their left and to their right So we try to help them step over But all they see is darkest night Shadows fall without warning And we stumble around Shadows fall without pity And there's no peace to be found

I've got to follow the money Gotta go to work Gotta make a living 'Til my body hurts Gotta bite my lip Gotta wreck my health Gotta break my back For my share of wealth I've got to follow the money Gotta go to work Gotta make a living 'Til my body hurts Gotta bite my lip Gotta wreck my health Gotta break my back For my share of wealth I've gotta follow the money Gotta earn my pay I spent everything I earned yesterday Gotta find the cash 'Cause it won't find me So I can feed myself And my family When I left school I was bummin' around I'd smoke and drink and let my mind wander I'd roll out of bed about 12 o'clock I can't do that any longer 'Cause I've gotta follow the money I'm gonna go to work Gonna make a living 'Til my body hurts Gotta bite my lip Gotta wreck my health Gotta break my back For my share of wealth Now I need to toil 'cause it's good for my soul I feel clean when I'm working You can drop all the mystical celtic bull 'Cause that stuff's just jerking, always I'm not saying that I work like my dad I know I don't work like my mum But I'm made of the same stuff, and I'm six-feet tall Gimme the tools, I'll get the job done Gotta follow the money Gotta go to work Gotta make a living 'Til my body hurts Gotta bite my lip Gotta wreck my health Gotta break my back For my share of wealth I've gotta follow the money Gotta earn my pay I spent everything I earned yesterday Gotta find the cash 'Cause it won't find me So I can feed myself And my family Feed myself and my family That's why I'm working I'm working I'm working I'm working I'm working I'm working now
