The Ballad of the Fox Hunter (Introduction) - song lyrics

I've drawn on poetry over the years
So that I might provide another voice in lyric writing
And another perspective than my own
And one of the poets I've been drawn to has been, the Irish poet; W.B. Yeats

In the ballot of the fox hunter, Yates imagines and focuses in
On the special connection humans can have with another species
In this case, a king's hounds, with whom he would have gone hunting in his day

One blind hound lies apart
On the sun-smitten grass
He holds commune with his heart
The moments pass and pass

The blind hound with a mournful tail
He lifts his wintry head
The servants bear the body in
The hounds wail for the dead

A huntsman Rody, blow the horn
Make the hills reply
The huntsman loosens on the morn
A gay and mournful cry

As someone who's had pets throughout my life
And aspire to be a veterinarian
I can certainly attest to this special connection
One can have with other creatures
And how intuitive they can be

One is enough To scare life into us The lonesome hunter preys Upon your wholesome trust Oh darling Here comes the night Forever to ponder Dusk unto light Well here comes your man Here he comes to take you right Back to where You belong And there's nothing I believe in Given the chance To hold you under And there's nothing I believe in Every heart is a lonesome hunter

Give me some more wine my friend 'cause I can't be sober today Cos I need some wine to drown my sorrow this world is all in vain Come and sit by my side listen to the tale I have We can be merry, we can be crazy, not face reality Days have long passed me by faces seem haunting to me People I loved, people I lost now seem to let me be Where is my home that I seek it used to be there in your heart Now it's gone, no longer a bloom and I am left without There is no pity here only jokes remain Oh sweet numbness won't you come and keep me safe and warm And I know I lost it all Still you place your faith in me After all I have is gone Still you stand in victory So go home my brave little man go find your feet once again Will you be strong, will you be kind, do you deserve it all And I know I lost it all Still you place your faith in me After all I have is gone Still you stand in victory

We invariably left the prairies, in my heart Since well it never moved an inch Does the love grow, home with the wild rose? Now, somethings moving out here We invariably left the prairies And my heart, since they never moved an inch And then you found me, alone on a Friday Now, somethings moving out here Swap Garneau for Dundas My parents for your dad The Rockies for the Great Lakes And my heart pounds as you say Swap Garneau for Dundas My parents for your dad The Rockies for the Great Lakes And my heart pounds as you say And all these things will pass It's the good ones that will last And right here what we've had Is a good thing, and it will last And all these things will pass It's the good ones that will last And right here what we've had Is a good thing, it will last

I wish I was in Carrighfergus Only for nights in Ballygrant I would swim over the deepest ocean Only for nights in Ballygrant But the sea is wide, and I can't get over And neither have I wings to fly Or if I could find me a handsome boatsman To ferry me over to my love and die Now in Kilkenny, it is reported They've marble stones there, as black as ink With gold and silver, I would transport her But I'll sing no more now, 'til I get a drink I'm drunk today, but then I'm seldom sober A handsome rover from town to town Oh-oh, but I am sick now, my days are over Come all you young lads, and lay me down I wish I was in Carrighfergus Only for nights in Ballygran

This glancing life is like a morning star A setting sun, or rolling waves at sea A gentle breeze or lightning in a storm A dancing dream of all eternity The sand was shimmering in the morning light And dancing off the dunes so far away The night held music so sweet, so long And there we lay until the break of day We woke that morning at the onward call Our camels bridled up, our howdahs full The sun was rising in the eastern sky Just as we set out to the desert's cry Calling, yearning, pulling, home to you The tents grew smaller as we rode away On earth that tells of many passing days The months of peace and all the years of war The lives of love and all the lives of fears Calling, yearning, pulling, home to you We crossed the river beds all etched in stone And up the mighty mountains ever known Beyond the valleys in the searing heat Until we reached the caravanserai Calling, yearning, pulling, home to you Calling, yearning, pulling, home to you What is this life that pulls me far away? What is that home where we cannot reside? What is that quest that pulls me onward? My heart is full when you are by my side Calling, yearning, pulling, home to you Calling, yearning, pulling, home to you

White are the far-off plains And white the fading forests grow The wind dies out amongst the tides And denser still the snow A gathering weight on roof and tree Falls down scarce audibly The meadows and far-sheeted streams Lie still without a sound Like some soft minister of dreams The snowfall hoods me around In wood and water, earth and air A silence is everywhere Save when at lonely spells Some farmer's sleigh is urged on With rustling runner and sharp bells Swings by me and is gone Or from the empty waste I hear A sound remote and clear The barking of a dog To cattle, is sharply pued Borne, echoing from some wayside stall Or barnyard far afield Then all is silent and the snow Falls settling soft and slow The evening deepens and the grey Folds closer Earth to sky The world seems shrouded, so far away Its noises sleep, and I As secret as yon buried stream Plod dumbly on and dream And dream And dream I dream And I dream

Alas my love, you do me wrong To cast me off discourteously And I have loved you oh so long Delighting in your company Greensleeves was my delight Greensleeves, my heart of gold Greensleeves was my heart of joy And who but my Lady Greensleeves I have been ready at your hand To grant whatever thou would'st crave I have waged both life and land Your love and goodwill for to have Greensleeves was my delight Greensleeves was my heart of gold Greensleeves was my heart of joy And who but my Lady Greensleeves Thy petticoat of sendle white With gold embroidered gorgeously Thy petticoat of silk and white And these I bought thee gladly Greensleeves was my heart of gold Greensleeves was my heart of joy Greensleeves was my heart of joy And who but my Lady Greensleeves
