Oh my God, you won't believe what came in the mail No Yeah Who sent it? You know Oh I don't even have to say it Don't say it Yeah She's going to be so surprised She's going to freak out (oh no) Oh I wonder what it says Wait wait wait wait wait, he said what No Oh- no, no, no, no, no He wrote it down You know, it's just- You got a letter When did it come When did it come I got your postcard from St. Louis It was nice of you to send I love the way you signed it Dear old friend Hope you're thinking of me fondly When you make it to L.A. Remember how we joked about us Living there someday (he's the worst) Don't you go and Write me a letter from Marietta, Georgia where you don't sleep alone I made peace with your travels, my composure unravels Staring at that postal code I'm here and you're gone And I believe that's for the better And I pretend to be your pawn With each sweet halfhearted gesture But I don't need to know the weather Down in Marietta Dear, I don't need to know the weather Down in Marietta I expect a call from Eugene With a case about the clouds And an echo 'cross the country When you shout my name out loud And my, my, I'm gonna tell you right I'll be waitin' on a snowy car That mountain air, it can't keep you long when You've got my sincerest regards Don't you go and Write me a letter from Marietta, Georgia where you don't sleep alone I made peace with your travels, my composure unravels Staring at that postal code I'm here and you're gone And I believe that's for the better And I pretend to be your pawn With each sweet halfhearted gesture But I don't need to know the weather Down in Marietta Dear, I don't need to know the weather Down in Mar- down in Marietta Now I'm thinkin' you don't like me And that's fine, I'm happy here (I'm so happy here) I prefer New England seasons And my vision's getting clear Forget me and my troubles Don't pretend you miss this face This is the last time I'll be writing Please don't talk about that place Don't you go and Write me a letter from Marietta, Georgia where you don't sleep alone I made peace with your travels, my composure unravels Staring at that postal code I'm here and you're gone And I believe that's for the better And I pretend to be your pawn With each sweet emptyhearted gesture But I don't care to know the weather Down in Marietta Dear, I don't care to know the weather Down in Mar- down in Marietta Oh yeah

Sarah moved down to Harlan county Found no work and found no bounty Took her share to feed her kin And kept em clear of medicine What rotten shape they keep us in When mama couldn't live alone Sarah brought her family home With Emma's baby due in June Four generations, two bedrooms And not one goddamn thing to do Can't this world get its use outta me I'm just like a daisy underneath a canopy With sunlight always out of reach The years had slowed the foundry down So Sarah tended bar in town It was such a fight to pry the doors Gettin' women workin' on the floors No they don't make nothin' anymore Can't this world get its use outta me I'm just like a daisy underneath a canopy With sunlight always out of reach There's not a dream left in my head Except to give more than I take But these walls are painted lead And my spirit's shaken Oh, shaken Mama passed in '93 Tommy got his GED Emma left and married young A man content to raise her son But Sarah had nowhere to run So with nothing left to make her stay Sarah thought she'd move away But as she combed through locks of greying hair The mirror seemed to catch her stare No there's no sense going anywhere Can't this world get its use outta me I'm just like a daisy underneath a canopy With sunlight always out of reach She wondered Can't this world get its use outta me I'm just a like baby left to swing under a tree The sunlight never gets to me
