Carrickfergus - song lyrics

I wish I was in Carrickfergus
Only for nights in Ballygrand
I would swim over the deepest ocean
The deepest ocean, my love to find
But the sea is wide and I cannot swim over
And neither have I the wings to fly
If I could find me a handsome boatman
To ferry me over my love and I
My childhood days bring back sweet reflections
The happy times I spent so long ago
My boyhood friends and kind relations
Have all past on now like melting snow
I'll spend my da - ys an endless rover
Soft is the grass and sure, my bed is free
Oh but to be back, in carrickfergus
To strike that lonely road, down by the sea
And in kilkenny it is reported
On marble stone there as black as ink
With gold and silver I would support her
But I'll sing no more now til I get a drink
For I'm drunk today and I'm seldom sober
A handsome rover from town to town
Ah but I'm sick now my days are numbered
Come all ye young men and lay me down

I wished I had you in Carrickfergus, Only for nights in Ballygrand, I would swim over the deepest ocean, The deepest ocean to be by your side. But the sea is wide and I can't swim over And neither have I wings to fly. I wish I could find me a handy boatman To ferry me over to my love and die. My childhood days bring back sad reflections Of happy days so long ago. My boyhood friends and my own relations. Have all passed on like the melting snow. So I'll spend my days in endless roving, Soft is the grass and my bed is free. Oh to be home now in Carrickfergus, On the long road down to the salty sea. And in Kilkenny it is reported On marble stone there as black as ink, With gold and silver I did support her But I'll sing no more now till I get a drink. I'm drunk today and I'm rarely sober, A handsome rover from town to town. Oh but I am sick now and my days are numbered Come all ye young men and lay me down

I remember the night that he came in from the wintery cold and damp A giant of a man in an oilskin coat and the bundle that told he was a tramp He stood at the bar and he called a pint then turned and gazed at the fire On a night like this to be safe and dry is my one and only desire. So here's to those that are dead and gone The friends that I loved dear And here's to you then I'll bid you adieu Saying Donegal Danny's been here me boys Donegal Danny's been here Then in a voice that was hushed and low he said, listen I'll tell you a tale How a man of the sea became a man of the roads and never more will set sail I've fished out of Howth and Killybegs, Ardglass and Baltimore But the cruel sea has beaten me and I'll end my days on the shore So here's to those that are dead and gone The friends that I loved dear And here's to you then I'll bid you adieu Saying Donegal Danny's been here me boys Donegal Danny's been here One fateful night in the wind and the rain we set sail from Killybegs town There were five of us from sweet Donegal and one from County Down We were fishermen who worked the sea and never counted the cost But I never thought when that night was done that my fine friends would all be lost So here's to those that are dead and gone The friends that I loved dear And here's to you then I'll bid you adieu Saying Donegal Danny's been here me boys Donegal Danny's been here Then the storm it broke and drove the boat to the rocks about ten miles from shore As we fought the tide we hoped inside to see our homes once more Then we struck a rock and holed the bow and all of us knew that she'd go down So we jumped right into the icy sea and prayed to God we wouldn't drown But the raging sea was rising still as we struck out for the land And she fought with all her cruelty to claim that gallant band By St John's Point in the early dawn I dragged myself on the shore And I cursed the sea for what she'd done and vowed to sail her never more So here's to those that are dead and gone The friends that I loved dear And here's to you then I'll bid you adieu Saying Donegal Danny's been here me boys Donegal Danny's been here

Schooldays over, come on then John, time to be gettin' your pit boots on On with your sark and moleskin trousers, it's time you were on your way Time you were learning the pitman's job and earning a pitman's pay Come on then Jim, it's time to go, time you were working down below Time to be handling a pick and shovel, you start at the pit today Time you were learning the collier's job and earning a collier's pay Come on then Dai, it's almost light, time you were off to the anthracite The morning mist in on the valley, it's time you were on your way Time you were learning the miner's job and earning a miner's pay Schooldays over, come on then John, time to be gettin' your pit boots on On with your sark and moleskin trousers, it's time you were on your way Time you were learning the pitman's job and earning a pitman's pay

Hey, Johnny Mcgory Tell me where's your glory gone I saw you up in the Monto With your old leg gone A dirty Flanders bullet Sure it left you half a man Hey, Johnny Mcgory Where's your old leg gone Up the Sally Gardens Around the back of the pipes Messing with the liberty bells A man could lose his stripes Trading on your troubles And grabbing every chance To show the randy old ones All the things you learned in France Hey, Johnny Mcgory Tell me where's your glory gone I saw you up in the Monto With your old leg gone A dirty Flanders bullet Sure it left you half a man Hey, Johnny Mcgory Where's your old leg gone Up the Gloucester Diamond Red Biddy on your mind Not a tosser in your pocket Nor a soul you could remind The lord knows you're a darling You never did give in Your neck's as hard as concrete And your laugh's a mortal sin Hey, Johnny Mcgory Tell me where's your glory gone I saw you up in the Monto With your old leg gone A dirty Flanders bullet Sure it left you half a man Hey, Johnny Mcgory Where's your old leg gone Monday in the Iveagh Tuesday in the dregs Wednesday's walking wounded Thursday's soldier begs Friday's heroes on the touch And Saturday's lost again How if Sunday's good intentions Sure we start the week again Hey, Johnny Mcgory Tell me where's your glory gone I saw you up in the Monto With your old leg gone A dirty Flanders bullet Sure it left you half a man Hey, Johnny Mcgory Where's your old leg gone
