Born and Raised In Black and White - song lyrics

The wind blows hard across the Texas plains
Makes some people go insane
While others quietly pray for rain
That's where we came from

Two boys playin' in the burnin' sun
One with books, one with guns
Mama calls but just one comes
The other one runs

With a Christian sense of wrong and right
We were born and raised in black and white
One learned to pray, one loved to fight
We were born and raised in black and white
We were born and raised in black and white

Brother took to the gospel road
Spent his whole live saving souls
When he looked at me, his blood ran cold
He didn't even try

I had no dreams, I had no plans
But a gun felt good in my right hand
The warden asked, "How come you killed that man?"
I said, "I don't know why"

"Welcome home," said the hot moonlight
We were born and raised in black and white
One lives to pray, one prays for life
We were born and raised in black and white
We were born and raised in black and white

Someone handed me a cigarette
They offered me my last request
I asked my mortal soul be blessed
By someone close to me

He came to me with trembling hands
He swore he'd never understand
I said it's just what life had planned
It's destiny

Don't waste your tears on me tonight
We were born and raised in black and white
I chose the dark, you chased the light
We were born and raised in black and white
We were born and raised in black and white

The wind blows hard across the Texas plains
Makes some people go insane
While others quietly pray for rain

I hear the sound of a gravel road I feel the wheels of a Detroit steel takin' me home I see the house just up ahead Sing to the one, my daddy's son will lie awake in bed And dream myself to sleep And pray my soul to keep Plaid, dirt, white shirts, blue collar Still runnin' through my veins I was born small town, deep roots Mud on these boots I wouldn't change a thing It's how I was born and raised (Born and raised, born and raised) (Born and raised) Born and raised I'll never leave this little town The family, the memories, the roots that I put down Know who I am, ain't gonna change Might find a brand new melody but the song remains the same I'm proud of where I'm from Yeah we're the lucky ones Plaid dirt, white shirts, blue collar Still runnin' through my veins I was born small town, deep roots Mud on these boots I wouldn't change a thing It's how I was born and raised (Born and raised, born and raised, born and raised) Born and raised It's how I was born and raised (Born and raised, born and raised, born and raised) Born and raised It's how I was born and raised I know that gravel road will always lead me home Somewhere that shootin' star points me to where you are I know that gravel road will always lead me home Somewhere that shootin' star points me to where you are Plaid dirt, white shirts, blue collar Still runnin' through my veins I was born small town, deep roots Mud on these boots I wouldn't change a thing It's how I was born and raised (Born and raised, born and raised, born and raised) Born and raised It's how I was born and raised (Born and raised, born and raised, born and raised) Born and raised (It's how I was born and raised) I'll never leave this little town

Was it bitter then, With our backs against the wall? Were we better men, Than we'd ever been before? Say, if she came again today, Would you still answer to the call? Tell the truth my friend, Don't it matter anymore? We were simple men, By her side when she was born. Talkin' about the dream. It was simple then, Like the freedom when you fall. And we were smaller then you see, But soon we gathered like a storm. They don't understand What that thunder meant at all. Was he crucified, Was he done in by the law? Are you satisfied, That he'll never ride again? Some people say he got away, They say he never died at all. If that story's true, Does it bother you my friend? Was it bitter then, With our backs against the wall? Spoken Say, two thousand years ago. Were we better men, Than we'd ever been before? Spoken Or two hundred years ago. Say, if she came again today, Would you still answer to the call? Or tomorrow. Tell the truth my friend, Don't it matter anymore?

In my own way, I'm a believer. In my own way, right or wrong. I don't talk too much about it. It's something I keep workin' on. I don't have too much to build on, My faith has never been that strong. There is a man there in that buildin'. He's a holy man, they say. He keeps talkin' about tomorrow, While I keep strugglin' with today. He preaches hellfire and brimstone, And heaven seems so far away. I do believe in a higher power. One that loves us, one and all. Not someone to solve my problems, Or to catch me when I fall. He gave us all a mind to think with. And to know what's right or wrong. He is that inner spirit, That keeps us strong. In my own way, I'm a believer. But not in voices I can't hear. I believe in a lovin' father. One I never have to fear, That I should live life at its fullest, Just as long as I am here. Mmm-mmm, mmm-mm.
