Back on the Backroads - song lyrics

Well I'm sick of all these city lights
Paying too much money for a good time
Rather call some friends of mine
Say there's a place that ain't hard to find
It's just two lefts and one right
A beat up barn on the county line
Ain't too far for a truck or car
Yeah I know a place we can go

On the backroads
And we can crank up that radio
Just bring an ice chest full of beer
Ain't nothin' but hay fields out here
And everything's gonna be all right
The dance floor's made of dirt tonight
On the backroads
Yeah back on the backroads

When you get close, you better drive slow
Cause this old road's full of potholes
Just flip your brights a couple times
So we all know you ain't the PoPo
Yeah we're all here on country time
Tearin' it up under cargo lights
We might stay here all night
Wake up to that morning sunrise

On the backroads
And we can crank up that radio
Just bring an ice chest full of beer
Ain't nothin' but hay fields out here
And everything's gonna be all right
The dance floor's made of dirt tonight
On the backroads
Yeah back on the backroads

Yeah back on the backroads
We can crank up that radio
Yeah just bring your beer or alcohol
Hell you can even bring your dog
If you get lost, just give me a call
We're tearin' it up all night long
On the backroads
Yeah back on the backroads
Aw yeah

When I jumped off, I had a bucket full of thoughts When I first jumped off, I held that bucket in my hand Ideas that would take me all around the world I stood and watched the smoke behind the mountain curl It took me a long time to get back on the train Now I'm gone and I'll never look back again I'm gone and I'll never look back at all You know I'll never look back again I turn my face into the howlin' wind It took me a long time to get back on the train See my face in the town that's flashing by See me standing at the station in the rain See me running there beside the car I left it all behind, again I'll travel far It took me a long time to get back on the train When I jumped off, I had a bucket full of thoughts When I first jumped off, I held that bucket in my hand Ideas that would take me all around the world I stood and watched the smoke behind the mountains curl It took me a long time to get back on the train It took me a long time to get back on the train It took me a long time to get back on the train

I recall small town stars The radio tower in the reservoir The way it was The way it goes And the way crazy way you drove Backroads Daredevil on a joyride Thought you were a rebel of some kind Angels watching over all the time Didn't even know Backroads Small town stars That shone and all night only seem to say You are one of our own Hey, you might be someone Someday Heaven was above your head Met you at the Watershed The day the doors of high school close God opens the window Backroads Say goodbye to childhood Getting wild up in the woods Drop the cans when the policemen show And everybody dove Backroads Different cop on the same night Stopped a kid about a tail light Somebody thought it didn't look right Might as well have said he didn't look white Might've rode all night, might've gone far Had he been riding in a different car You and I were in the dark Driving under different stars That shone and all night only seem to stay You are one of our own Hey, you might be someone Someday Young, in love and it's down my eyes Never gonna hurt like the first time Pulling over on a shoulder Let the tears drops roll Backroads Cliché on the radio Speaking straight to my soul Baby, baby please don't go Don't leave me all alone Backroads But I was not alone I had the stars that shone You are one of our own Hey, you might be someone You got hearts to break You've got mistakes to make You got miles And miles And miles to go Backroads Backroads I recall small town stars The radio tower in the reservoir The way it was The way it goes And the crazy way you drove

Paycheck, won't you take my blues away? Yeah, I've been waiting on you since Monday And it's work, work, work And I need a break Won't you take my blues away? Paycheck, won't you take my blues away? Yeah, I've been waiting on you since Monday And it's work, work, work And I need a break Won't you take my blues away? So drink it, yeah And spend it, yeah 'Cause we're climbing that ladder Punching that clock So raise them up Paycheck, won't you take my blues away? Paycheck, won't you take my blues away? Walked through them double doors Ordered up a double Crown Saw an angel looking at me So, I sat down Talked for a couple songs Heartbreaks and hometowns Slid a little closer Thinkin' I would come around Had to tell her, baby It ain't you I just got something I gotta do Tonight I just wanna whiskey And sit here alone Flip through the pictures of the memories on my phone And jukebox some Whitley 'Til the lights come on You look so right, but girl, it feels so wrong I thought I could show up, get drunk, and get this heartbreak gone But tonight, I need a raincheck on moving on She said, Boy, that's okay I've seen that look before Ain't ever easy when you Watch 'em walk out the door So I bought her a round Said, "Have a good night" Maybe I'll be good next time Tonight I just wanna whiskey And sit here alone Flip through the pictures of the memories on my phone And jukebox some Whitley 'Til the lights come on You look so right, but girl, it feels so wrong I thought I could show up, get drunk, and get this heartbreak gone But tonight, I need a raincheck on moving on Yeah, tonight I need a raincheck on moving on Letting go Getting close Maybe tomorrow I don't know But tonight, I just wanna whiskey And sit here alone Flip through the pictures of the memories on my phone And jukebox some Whitley 'Till the lights come on You look so right, but girl, it feels so wrong I thought I could show up, get drunk, and get this heartbreak gone But tonight, I need a raincheck on moving on, oh Yeah, tonight I need a raincheck on moving on

I've been blessed and I have sinned Wear the scars of where I've been Lucky to be alive and breathe In this midnight air I swear you're right here Get the chills on my skin And that's when I get this feeling You're shinin' down on me, showing me the way Angel in the night here to save the day Like a light out of the dark, straight across the sky Up there in that starlight, starlight tonight Yeah, tonight Runnin' down this dream Up against this road Sometimes the only thing that I got Keeps me movin' on Right where I need to be No matter where I go Never too far from home Got you shinin' down on me, showing me the way Angel in the night here to save the day Like a light out of the dark, straight across the sky Up there in that starlight, starlight tonight Oh, tonight To the good that die young Fighters for the freedom fought that keeps me free And all the heroes in my heart who taught me to believe And that's why I believe in things I can't see Shinin' down on me, showing me the way Angel in the night here to save the day Like a light out of the dark, straight across the sky Up there in that starlight, starlight tonight Yeah, up there in that starlight, starlight tonight Yeah, tonight Shinin' down on me
