Accidental Racist (feat. LL Cool J) - song lyrics

To the man that waited on me
At the Starbucks down on Main
I hope you understand
When I put on that t-shirt
The only thing I meant to say
Is I'm a Skynyrd fan
The red flag on my chest somehow is
Like the elephant in the corner of the south
And I just walked him right in the room
Just a proud rebel son with an 'ol can of worms
Lookin' like I got a lot to learn
But from my point of view

I'm just a white man comin' to you from the southland
Tryin' to understand what it's like not to be
I'm proud of where I'm from but not everything we've done
And it ain't like you and me can re-write history
Our generation didn't start this nation
We're still pickin' up the pieces, walkin' on eggshells, fightin' over yesterday
And caught between southern pride and southern blame

They called it Reconstruction, fixed the buildings, dried some tears
We're still siftin' through the rubble after a hundred-fifty years
I try to put myself in your shoes and that's a good place to begin
But it ain't like I can walk a mile in someone else's skin

Cause I'm a white man livin' in the southland
Just like you I'm more than what you see
I'm proud of where I'm from but not everything we've done
And it ain't like you and me can re-write history
Our generation didn't start this nation
And we're still paying for the mistakes
That a bunch of folks made long before we came
And caught somewhere between southern pride and southern blame

Dear Mr. White Man, I wish you understood
What the world is really like when you're livin' in the hood
Just because my pants are saggin' doesn't mean I'm up to no good
You should try to get to know me, I really wish you would
Now my chains are gold but I'm still misunderstood
I wasn't there when Sherman's March turned the south into firewood
I want you to get paid but be a slave I never could
Feel like a new fangled Django, dodgin' invisible white hoods
So when I see that white cowboy hat, I'm thinkin' it's not all good
I guess we're both guilty of judgin' the cover not the book
I'd love to buy you a beer, conversate and clear the air
But I see that red flag and I think you wish I wasn't here

I'm just a white man
(If you don't judge my do-rag)
Comin' to you from the southland
(I won't judge your red flag)
Tryin' to understand what it's like not to be
I'm proud of where I'm from
(If you don't judge my gold chains)
But not everything we've done
(I'll forget the iron chains)
It ain't like you and me can re-write history
(Can't re-write history baby)

Oh, Dixieland
(The relationship between the Mason-Dixon needs some fixin')
I hope you understand what this is all about
(Quite frankly I'm a black Yankee but I've been thinkin' about this lately)
I'm a son of the new south
(The past is the past, you feel me)
And I just want to make things right
(Let bygones be bygones)
Where all that's left is southern pride
(RIP Robert E. Lee but I've gotta thank Abraham Lincoln for freeing me, know what I mean)
It's real, it's real
It's truth

Kevin wasn't really all that popular in school But I remember well the day I thought Now, that guy's pretty cool He pulled into the parking lot and everybody cheered 'Cause he'd gone and painted his entire Chevy Cavalier Camouflage, camouflage It disappears when it pulls out of his garage Camouflage, camouflage Well, I asked Jenny to the prom And her mom knew how to sew So she made a matching tux And gown from Duck Blind Mossy Oak We took pictures in the backyard Before we went to the dance And the only thing that you can see Is our faces and our hands Camouflage, camouflage You should've seen the way it popped with her corsage Camouflage, camouflage Ain't nothing doesn't go with camouflage You can blend in in the country You can stand out in the fashion world Be invisible to a whitetail Irresistible to a redneck girl Camouflage, camouflage Oh, you're my favorite color, camouflage You can blend in in the country You can stand out in the fashion world Be invisible to a whitetail Irresistible to a redneck girl Well, the stars and bars offend some folks And I guess I see why But nowadays there's still a way To show your Southern pride The only thing as patriotic As the old red, white and blue It's green and gray and black And brown and tan all rolled into Camouflage, camouflage Designed by Mother Nature and by God It's camouflage, camouflage You're my favorite color, camouflage, yeah

On my fifth birthday I got so upset About the brand new bike that I didn't get I'd prayed my heart out and it didn't seem fair. I told my grandpa, "I guess God doesn't care" And he just smiled and said, "My child," "Make no mistake Every prayer you pray gets answered Even though Sometimes, the answer is no." Five years later, out behind the shed With a stolen pack of grandpa's cigarettes I struck a match, and held that first one to my lips And prayed to God, "Please let me get away with this." And through the smoky air I saw grandpa standing there. Make no mistake Every prayer you pray gets answered Even though Sometimes, the answer is no When I think of all the answers in my life, I would have to say There's no doubt it was always for the best when I didn't get my way. Grandpa got older, like grandpas do His health was failing and I guess I knew It'd be best if he was called on home But selfishly I prayed that God would keep him hanging on And when he passed away, in my mind I heard him say. Make no mistake Every prayer you pray gets answered Even though Sometimes, the answer is no. Sometimes the answer Is no.

Mother, do not cry for me All of this, is exactly how, it's supposed to be I'm right here, can you hear my voice My life, my love, my Lord, my baby boy As they nail me to this tree Just know the Father waits for me God, how can, this be your will To have your son, and my son killed Whatever happens, whatever you see Whatever your eyes tell you has, become of me This is not, is not the end I am making, all things new again I remember, when you were born In that manger where I first held you, in my arms So many miracles, and lives you've changed And this world repays you how, with all this pain And as they nail me to this tree Just know the Father waits for me God, how can, this be your will To have your son, and my son killed Whatever happens (whatever happens) Whatever you see (I don't wanna see) Whatever your eyes tell you has, become of me This is not (tell me it's not) Is not the end I am making, all things new again Whatever happens (oh, oh) Whatever you see (oh) Whatever your eyes tell you has, become of me This is not (no) Is not the end I am making, all things new again

When I'm sitting in traffic some afternoon Or bored to death in some waiting room Well I'm gonna close my eyes and picture you Today You keep brushing that hair back outta your eyes And it just keeps falling and so do I Well I'm feeling like the luckiest man alive Today I don't know about tomorrow But right now the whole world feels right And the memory of a day like today Can get you through the rest of your life Well I know it won't always be like this Life can change as quick as a kiss It's not over yet and I already miss Today And as the seasons change and time goes by When your hair is grey and so is mine Know for sure that you're gonna be just as beautiful As you are to me today. Bring on tomorrow, I've got today Bring on tomorrow, I've got today Bring on tomorrow, right now the whole world is right Bring on tomorrow Because the memory of a day like today Can get you through the rest of your life
