A Better Place to Live - song lyrics

There's a bit of magic in a simple little smile
Something that just makes life seem a little more worthwhile
And there's a world of meaning in the touch of someone's hand
A gentle touch that let's your brother know you understand
Oh if people would stop taking and just once try to give
We could make the world we're living in a better place to live
La la la la la la la la la la la la

And if we'd love one another instead of finding faults
We could afford the price of peace, love is all it costs
Oh wouldn't it be great to live and sing in harmony
Everybody take your brother's hand and sing my song with me

La la la la la la la la la la la la

All life has to offer that's what most folks desire
But offer nothing in return, cause they don't seem to care
And if we'd ask to be forgiven and be willing to forgive
We could make the world we're living in a better place to live
And if we'd all climb together, we could climb the highest hill
We could make the world we're living in a better place to live

And if we'd love one another instead of finding faults
We could afford the price of peace, love is all it costs
Oh wouldn't it be great to live and sing in harmony
Everybody take your brother's hand and sing my song with me

La la la la la la la la la la la la

It was an early morning bar room, And the place just opened up. And the little man come in so fast and Started at his cup. And the broad who served the whisky She was a big old friendly girl. And she tried to fight her empty nights By smilin' at the world. And she said "Hey Bub, It's been awhile Since you been around. Where the hell you been hidin'? And why you look so down?" But the little man just sat there like he'd never heard a sound. The waitress she gave out with a cough, And acting not the least put off, She spoke once again. She said, "I don't want to bother you, Consider it's understood. I know I'm not no beauty queen, But I sure can listen good." And the little man took his drink in his hand And he raised it to his lips. He took a couple of sips. And he told the waitress this story. "I am the midnight watchman down at Miller's Tool and Die. And I watch the metal rusting, and I watch the time go by. A week ago at the diner I stopped to get a bite. And this here lovely lady she sat two seats from my right. And Lord, Lord, Lord she was alright. "Well, she was so damned beautiful she could warm a winter's frost. But she was long past lonely, and well nigh kinda lost. Now I'm not much of a mover, or a pick-em-up easy guy, But I decided to glide on over, and give her one good try. And Lord, Lord, Lord she was worth a try. "I was Tongued-tied like a school boy, and I stammered out some words. But it did not seem to matter much, 'cause I don't think she heard. She just looked clear on through me to a space back in my head. And it shamed me into silence, as quietly she said, 'If you want me to come with you, then that's all right with me. Cause I know I'm going nowhere, and anywhere's a better place to be. Anywhere's a better place to be.' "I drove her to my boarding house, and I took her up to my room. And I went to turn on the only light to brighten up the gloom. But she said, 'Please leave the light off, Oh I don't mind the dark.' And as her clothes all tumbled 'round her, I could hear my heart. The moonlight SHONE upon her as she lay back in my bed. It was the kind of scene I only had imagined in my head. I just could not believe it, to think that she was real. And as I tried to tell her she said 'Shhh. I know just how you feel. And if you want to come here with me, then that's all right with me. 'Cause I've been oh so lonely, lovin' someone is a better way to be. Anywhere's a better way to be.' "The morning came so swiftly as I held her in my arms. But she slept like a baby, snug and safe from harm. I did not want to share her or dare to break the mood, So before she woke I went out to buy us both some food. "I came back with my paper bag, to find that she was gone. She'd left a six word letter saying 'It's time that I moved on.'" The waitress took her bar rag, and she wiped it across her eyes. And as she spoke her voice came out as something like a sigh. She said "I wish that I was beautiful, or that you were halfway blind. And I wish I weren't so god-damned fat, I wish that you were mine. And I wish that you'd come with me, when I leave for home. For we both know all about loneliness, and livin' all alone." And the little man, Looked at the empty glass in his hand. And he smiled a crooked grin, He said, " I guess I'm out of gin. And know we both have been so lonely. And if you want me to come with you, then that's all right with me. 'Cause I know I'm goin' nowhere and anywhere's a better place to be."

All I want is a quiet place to live Where I can enjoy the fruits of my labour Read the paper And not have to cry out loud In my mind, I can see it crystal clear Sharing my dreams with the people around me Now they surround me And I'm just a part of the crowd What will become of us? What about the children? What will they do to us next time around? What will the answer be? What will it mean to me? When are they gonna see we're underground? Here underground And all I want is a quiet place to live Where I can be free in a world of my making Instead of taking What they decided to give I wouldn't want what they have, no If I could only find (if I could only find) A quiet place to live

She said she'd never believed in the idea of fate No love at first sight stories I wasn't her soul mate When she collapsed I thought she was joking But she didn't get up again, she didn't get up again A thousand flowers, a hundred cards to say She's in a better place, she's in a better place Just face it, just face it, you can't let go (I can't be spoken for anymore) Just face it, just face it, you're on your own (I gave up everything I know) It carries on, it never stops (How could I go on without, how could I go on without) Just face it, just face it, you can't let go You can't let go She always said I was way too safe and I never could have fun I had to make few mistakes and get into trouble while I'm young So we broke in to the old train station And danced away the night until the cops chased us away It breaks my heart to think she's in a better place Just face it, just face it, you can't let go (I can't be spoken for anymore) Just face it, just face it, you're on your own (I gave up everything I know) It carries on, it never stops (How could I go on without, how could I go on without) Just face it, just face it, you can't let go You can't let go You can't let go Just face it, just face it One day I took off my ring to see if the memory would start to fade The time I spent away I wasted all those days She's in a better place, she's in a better place Just face it, just face it, you can't let go (I can't be spoken for anymore) Just face it, just face it, you're on your own (I gave up everything I know) It carries on, it never stops (How could I go on without, how could I go on without) Just face it, just face it, you can't let go You can't let go You can't let... go Just face it, just face it If I could, I'd trade with you If I could, I would

The hills were alive with wildflowers And I was as wild, even wilder than they For at least I could run, they just died in the sun And I refused to just wither in place Just a wild mountain rose needing freedom to grow So I ran, fearing not where I'd go When a flower grows wild, it can always survive Wildflowers don't care where they grow And the flowers I knew, in the fields where I grew Were content to be lost in the crowd They were common and close, I had no room for growth And I wanted so much to branch out So I uprooted myself from my home ground and left Took my dreams and I took to the road When a flower grows wild, it can always survive Wildflowers don't care where they grow I grew up fast and wild and I never felt right In a garden so different from me I just never belonged, I just longed to be gone So the garden one day set me free I hitched a ride with the wind, and since he was my friend I just let him decide where we'd go When a flower grows wild, it can always survive Wildflowers don't care where they grow Just a wild rambling rose seeking misteries untold No regret for the path that I chose When a flower grows wild, it can always survive Wildflowers don't care where they grow Wildflowers don't care where they grow

Lookin' outta my windowpane Tears minglin' with the rain I'm so lonesome I could cry, just like old Hank Starin' down on the city street Feelin' empty and incomplete There's a place I need to be to fill my tank A place I can go where I can be free Where I can be happy and just be me Home Where the warm wind's blowin' And the river's flowin' along Like a lazy bum in the midday sun And I've gone fishin' with my pole at the fishin' hole Where I can lay down my heavy load And know that I am always welcome home I left home I was seventeen I had a lot of ambitious dreams Seen a lot of those dreams come true I've had good luck I ain't complain' that's for sure I got a lot to be thankful for One of those things is a magic door that opens up Back to the time when I was a kid To the sounds of the crickets and the katydids It's called Home On the front porch swingin' And the fern pots hangin' Home With the church bells ringin' And voices singin' those Old songs that mend my mind like a stitch in time Where the tea is sweet and the love complete Oh me, I wanna go home I often think about where I have been Where I am goin' and that's about when I think about Home Where the soul finds comfort and the heart finds pleasure Home Where the depths of love is hard to measure It's home I hear you callin', I hear you callin' I'll never be lost as long as I know There's place like that where I can go Where I can restore my weary soul On the mountain slopes and the soft blue smoke Of home Home sweet home Home Back to the hills with the whippoorwills of Home With the fireflies blinkin' and the night stars winkin' Home Honeysuckle vine and Muscadine wine at Home Where the ginseng grows in the shady groves of Home With family and friends and joy that never ends Home There's no place like it, no place like it Home
